There are literally thousands of books on leadership that suggest what you need to learn. The keys to unlocking your potential as a leader amounts to unlearning these three habits of thinking.

1. The Need to Know. The biggest problem with most people in leadership positions is feeling that people depend upon you for supplying answers. Old adages such as “knowledge is power” only play into this idea. The reality is that the role of exceptional leaders is to provide powerful questions. The best guidance comes from being curious – and demonstrating the value of inquisitiveness. Leaders need to be learners and exemplify learning and growth as a necessary condition for those you lead. When you focus on knowing – we close down our ability to learn. Effective leaders live in the learning mode.

2. The Belief That It Is The Leader that Makes the Organization Successful. In fact it is the organization that makes the leader successful. The leadership role involves making it necessary and possible for the organization to succeed – but is never the cause of the success. It is only when the leader ensures that the organization is built to perform to it’s highest potential, that the people who comprise the organization are performing at their highest potential – and the systems that support their performance are capable of increasing their performance – that the leader can be considered successful. There has never been a leader of a failed organization that has been deemed a great success despite it’s failure. Effective leaders focus their attention on creating fully competent, high performing organizations.

3. Believing That Leadership is a Destination. Leadership is a journey. It is not a status we attain – it is something we must constantly grow into. The conditions in which we lead are constantly changing and the demands on leadership are constantly in flux. Leadership requires continuous growth and improvement. To be a successful leader, you must have the courage and fortitude to buck the status-quo, expel mediocrity from whatever and whomever you lead – and constantly challenge yourself and those you lead to make what’s necessary possible, and what’s possible necessary in order to create a future you would choose. Effective leaders are exemplars of constant growth and continuous improvement.

Until we begin to be selective about what we need to learn – and what we need to unlearn – we are likely to remain marginally effective as leaders. Developing new habits of leadership – requires ridding ourselves of our unproductive beliefs and habits that inhibit our potential as fully effective leaders. Shedding unproductive habits requires escaping the confines of our comfort zone to the place where we challenge ourselves to become the kind of leader we need to and can be. Unlearning these three habits of thinking is a good place to begin.

There are three things that most people in leadership positions believe that undermine their ability to be an effective leader.
