ALPS Works

The traditional approach to leadership development is top-down. While organizations benefit from developing and continuously improving the leadership competencies of CEOs and their senior staff, the problem is that the performance of the people they lead determines their ultimate success as leaders.

It is the organization that makes the leader successful, not the other way around.

One of the most crucial responsibilities of a leader is to develop the leadership potential of the people they serve to meet the current organization’s needs and to develop the leaders you will need in the future. To accomplish this, leaders must be exemplars of exceptional leadership. While this is necessary, it is not sufficient. Leadership development requires an active approach that yields measurable results. That is the foundation of building high-performance organizations that maintain sustainable competitive advantages.

Solving the Three Reasons Leadership Development Efforts Fail

1.

Conventional teaching methods are ineffective for developing leaders. Traditional training methods can teach people about leadership but not how to be leaders. Leaders are not created in classrooms or behind the pages of books. Leadership develops when people understand that they must be able to influence the behavior of others to benefit from a shared clear understanding of purpose.

When the inability to influence others effectively becomes intolerable, the desire to become a competent leader becomes necessary and irresistible.

2.

Leadership cannot form in a vacuum. The only way to learn to lead is to lead. The learning must be both experiential and situational. We see this when leaders are lured away from successful companies and transplanted to struggling ones. There are countless examples of this failing time and time again. Leadership must be malleable and adaptive, and those who learn to lead by a rigid methodology cannot succeed in an increasingly VUCA world – one defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.

ALPS AccElevation aims to create adaptive, curious leaders who possess intellectual humility and demonstrate emotional intelligence to support change and innovate the systems necessary for inspiring high-performers and establishing a consistent high-performance culture.

3.

Managers control things, while leaders influence people. The most significant gap is that most successful organizations rely upon strong managers who are highly competent at attending to systems and processes to ensure consistently reliable outcomes. Without such people, organizations fail . However, the problem with expecting good managers to become capable leaders simply ignores that the skills are entirely different. And because you cannot control people, the transition to leadership for managers requires learning to let go of the impulses and proven ability to control – which fails in a VUCA world. There is clear proof that command and control are ineffective for building and leading high-performance organizations.

Poorly managed companies fail quickly, and poorly led companies fail eventually. The only way to improve how a company manages things is to effectively lead the people responsible for managing everything necessary.

Programs are Built on Principles and Practices with More Than 60 Years of Success

No organization can manage its way around poor leadership: effective business management requires capable leadership. Hard evidence demonstrates that leadership effectiveness directly correlates to business performance and success.

Leadership bonds the things you manage to your organization’s core by ensuring that people consistently perform to their potential and accomplish what matters most.

Our Core Principles:

  • The organization’s performance makes the leader successful.
  • You cannot manage people; you must lead them. You manage things.
  • The only way to manage things better is to lead the people responsible for getting them done more effectively.

Throughout our two decades of experience, we have seen that people evolve, and organizations thrive when we challenge their leaders to listen better, continuously learn and grow, and adapt to and lead change. That is why our CEO and Launch Cohorts have helped hundreds of clients make better decisions that drive better results.

We deliver individual feedback through intensive, assessment-driven coaching and mentoring by highly trained and experienced coaches. The Cohort brings together hundreds of years of relevant collective experience from its members.

ALPS Cohort members:

  • Gain an elevated perspective that leads to greater options and opportunities
  • Develop greater confidence to take and manage the risks inherent in their business

  • Are held accountable for accomplishing the things that matter most
  • DOUBLE THEIR RATE OF GROWTH – when compared to companies without effective leadership development

The ALPS Leadership Four-Stage AccElevation Approach

  1. Intensive Leadership Coaching/Mentoring

Private, intensive leadership coaching and mentoring sessions are conducted over Zoom. Each CEO is allotted 90 minutes per month in dedicated sessions offered in one single session or two 45-minute sessions on a regularly scheduled basis.

  1. AccElevation CEO Cohorts: Experiential Growth Labs for Business Leaders

This is a 4-hour virtual Cohort meeting comprised of up to 12 CEOs from non-competing companies that do not conduct transactional business with each other. These expertly facilitated experiential learning labs ensure that every member feels safe to confidentially bring their most important issues and challenges and gain valuable, honest feedback – and pushback, when necessary, from the Cohort.

The Cohort is like playing in a “leadership sandbox” —where members are safe to vet their ideas, challenge each other, and be comfortable being challenged. Members care and look out for each other and the success of their companies. They come prepared each month to have their thinking, biases, and limiting beliefs challenged and to stimulate their curiosity in an environment that stresses generosity and confidentiality. We cultivate deeper thinking and more advanced active listening skills, leading to interactive problem-solving to help each member accomplish what matters most.

Members also develop critical leadership competencies, beginning with learning to ask powerful, impactful questions to interrogate reality. They also learn to listen and think deeply to find answers and further questions that keep everyone continuously learning.

The Cohort is a challenging yet highly supportive environment led by expert leadership facilitators with advanced training and a minimum of 10 years of experience guiding CEOs to make better decisions and get consistently better results – in business and their lives.

We also offer our AccElevation Launch Program for key executives of Cohort members, which provides a similarly immersive experience for emerging leaders in line for senior roles.

  1. Captive Immersive Learning Labs for Developing Leaders

These 90-minute virtual executive sessions develop leadership awareness and competencies throughout the organization. Up to 8 leadership/management team members meet monthly in a facilitated session focusing on decisions, opportunities, issues and challenges the team faces. They provide an opportunity to apply leadership principles in addressing people effectively to solve problems.

  1. Wine, Dine & Learn/ Leadership Workshops for CEOs and Emerging Business Leaders

Four times yearly, we hold Leadership Workshops where we bring in top industry experts to present thought-provoking, in-depth, fully actionable programs on a broad range of relevant and valuable topics – from AI and current economic trends to organizational health and personal well-being and effectiveness.

These half-day events are attended by the CEO member and up to any four members of the organization you choose to attend based on the program’s specific topic. Following the expert presentation, the participants break into roundtable discussions to apply the takeaways to their organizations.

Following the event, the Cohort CEO members and the speaker attend a private “Wine, Dine & Learn” dinner at a nearby restaurant. (The dinner cost is not included in the tuition.)

Beyond the Core Program:

The Leadership Workshop Series culminates with an immersive annual retreat.

All Cohort members are encouraged to participate and are welcome to include their spouses / significant partners. These destination events are planned with the Cohort members and focus on leading a life of significant accomplishment as the cornerstone of leading a successful business. While the retreats are “extracurricular” (not inclusive of the program tuition), they provide tremendous value and serve to strengthen the bonds between members in ways that produce rich, lasting, and highly valued relationships.
