The ALPS Leadership Advantage

Leadership matters. When companies are thriving and sustainable – we can always look to highly competent leaders who are driving that performance.

Leadership is a performing art. It is not a simple accumulation of skills, knowledge, talent or any particular credentials. Leadership is a means to an end; to causing meaningful and significant accomplishments that ideally speak to a greater good that would not exist in the absence of that leadership. It is through the performance of leadership that people, organizations, and societies change for the better.

We believe that leadership can be learned – but cannot be taught. That learning must be self-directed and developed from within us by virtue of experience – and cannot be found in any book, class or workshop. Simply being a leader does not require leadership, but being an effective fully competent leader does. It is in understanding and striving to master the four essential tasks of leadership that people transform themselves into exceptional leaders.

The pathway to leadership competence is a journey. Unless we strive to remain competent —and aim to continuously improve and adapt —we invariably falter.  A fully competent leader must always remain prepared to perform as any true virtuoso would: with a nagging sense of both purpose and dissatisfaction that keeps driving you to be better tomorrow than you are today.

A fully competent leader must be bound by a sense of commitment to a deep, noble sense of purpose. Leaders who guide organizations beyond mediocrity operate with a sense of duty to accomplish whatever it takes to advance the cause of the organization they lead.

This is also predicated on the understanding that it is not the leader who makes those they lead successful; but it is those they lead who make the leader successful. Successful leaders accomplish this by determining what is necessary and demonstrating that it is possible and then guide others to take that possibility and make it necessary.

A leader’s performance is always measured by how others perform – in the same way a maestro conducts an orchestra. The leader plays a vital role in how that organization performs – but most of that effort is in preparation for the ultimate performance – making the organization’s accomplishments seem elegant – or even appear to be a matter of destiny.

A Focus on Purpose First and then Results

Our leadership programs are designed around an understanding of your organization’s core purpose. Rather than first focusing on the results you want (which is a function of management) – we focus on what causes the results you aim for (meaning leadership).

Purpose is the means by which you determine what things are most important to accomplish and also what drives the performance needed to accomplish them.

Before recommending any specific program, there are practical considerations that require a considered assessment and understanding of your needs. This takes into account the organization’s structure, size, the current level of performance and capacity – and current leadership performance.

Focusing on important objectives such as increasing profits or shareholder value may be fully worthwhile, but we recognize that they are the result of accomplishing whatever it is that causes these results. Without competent leadership, correcting outcomes is far more difficult or even unlikely.

This is true for every function within every organization: desired results are a function of what you are prepared to accomplish. Being prepared is a matter of competence – and competence only exists in the realization of meaningful, positive and significant accomplishments.

We view our role as aspirational – and yet fully pragmatic.   Our aims remain constantly focused on accomplishments that are meaningful, positive and significant. Our standards are one of never being fully satisfied with where we are – always realizing that our journey to obviate the dysfunction and incompetence that constrains the human spirit –  places new demands on us every single day.

Underpinning our efforts exists a clear sense of duty to an abiding purpose that guides our performance. Without a clear understanding of why we exist – it would be impossible to fully prepare and function as a true virtuoso – which is the only benchmark of fully-competent, high-performing leadership.
